7 Payday Loan Alternatives When Your Credit Is Bad

Last updated: September 27, 2026 · TreatOrCash is not a lender and does not give financial advice.

Bad credit narrows your options but it does not remove them. These are ordered roughly from cheapest to most expensive. Work down the list, not up it.

1. Ask the biller for a payment plan

Free, and consistently the most overlooked. Utilities, hospitals, landlords and phone companies all have hardship plans, and hospital bills in particular are often reduced substantially on request. Call before the due date, not after — you have more leverage while the account is current.

2. Local emergency assistance

Money you do not repay. Dialing 211 routes you to organisations that pay a specific bill on your behalf, and LIHEAP covers heating and cooling. Details and a script for the call are in our rent and utility guide.

3. A credit union Payday Alternative Loan

This product exists specifically to replace payday loans. Federal credit unions may offer small loans — generally a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars — with an interest rate capped well below payday pricing and a term of one to twelve months, plus a small application fee.

You have to be a member, which usually means living or working in an area, or belonging to an organisation, and often a $5 to $25 deposit. Find one you qualify to join with the federal credit union locator. If you expect to need small loans again, joining a credit union is the highest-value hour in this entire list.

4. Paycheck advance apps

Apps that front you part of earned wages before payday. Cheaper than a payday loan, but watch the "optional" tips and instant-transfer fees, which can add up to a high effective rate on a small advance. Most require a linked bank account and regular direct deposit, so they do not work for everyone.

5. Ask your employer

Some employers offer a payroll advance or a small hardship loan repaid from your paycheck, usually at no cost. It feels awkward to ask. It is also free money compared with everything below this line.

6. A secured or credit-builder loan

Not fast enough for an emergency this week, but this is how you avoid being in the same position next year. A credit-builder loan at a credit union reports to the bureaus and turns a few months of small payments into a better credit file and cheaper options later.

7. A small installment loan

If you have exhausted the list, an installment loan spread over months is usually less dangerous than a two-week balloon payment, because you are not required to produce the entire amount at once. Compare the total of payments and the APR, and borrow the smallest amount that solves the actual problem. Our guide on what a $500 loan costs shows the difference in real numbers.

What to be careful with

If you receive benefits

Benefit income counts with most lenders, but SSI has a resource rule that can reduce your payment if loan money is still in your account at the start of the next month. Read loans on Social Security or SSI before you borrow, and check BenefitsCheckUp for programs you may be eligible for and have never claimed.

Common questions

What is the cheapest alternative to a payday loan?

Assistance you do not repay, then a payment plan with the biller, then a credit union Payday Alternative Loan. Those three cover most situations.

What is a PAL?

A Payday Alternative Loan from a federal credit union: a small loan with an interest rate capped far below payday pricing and a term of one to twelve months.

Can I get a loan with no credit check?

Some lenders skip the traditional credit check but still verify income and identity. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed approval or asking for a fee up front.

Are cash advance apps safe?

They are generally cheaper than payday loans, but tips and instant-transfer fees can add up to a high effective rate on a small advance.

Will any of this hurt my credit?

Asking a biller for a payment plan and applying for assistance do not affect your credit. A loan application may create an inquiry, and the loan itself may be reported.
